The Bible warns of this plague of addiction.
In
Revelation 18:23 it says nations will be deceived by sorceries or
witchcraft. The Greek word here is pharmakiea, meaning drugs, love
potions, poison, etc. This is the Greek word for our English word
pharmacy. There is definitely a connection between witchcraft and drug
addition. Satan uses this as a means to tear down a nation so he may
have a point of control.
The Church and Addiction:
Ten years ago, few of us would have
considered chemical dependency, sexual addiction, or eating disorders
suitable topics for polite conversation within the church community.
These were among the "silent issues" in the church. Today, however,
addiction, compulsive behavior and abuse are widely recognized as
problems of enormous personal and social significance. Further, it is estimated that every addict directly affects at least ten other people.
Emerging Awareness:
Some of these people who suffer from
addiction, compulsive behavior, or abuse find it difficult to be part of
a church community. They may find that within their church,
self-defeating behavior is denied, ignored, or minimized by those who
use religion to shield themselves from life's realities.
Drug abuse is a serious public health problem that affects almost every community and family in some way. Each year drug abuse results in around 40 million serious illnesses or injuries among people in the United States. Many drug addicts, such as herion,
Meth or cocaine addicts and particularly injection drug users, are at
increased risk for HIV/AIDS as well as other infectious diseases like
hepatitis, tuberculosis, and sexually transmitted infections.
